In today’s always-on environment, devices wait to be woken up as soon as prompted by user action from a remote control, a smartphone or even a voice command. Fewer consumer devices are shut down completely, as most stay on standby mode to respond faster to users’ needs. To allow this while limiting power leakage, efficient logic solutions with partial power-down come into play at various voltage nodes.
For lower voltage nodes, Nexperia has long addressed partial power-off needs with logic solutions based on our low-voltage AUP, AVC, AXP, LVC and LVT technologies. And now, LV-A(T) technology is expanding our standard logic portfolio with types that offer the partial-power down feature at the 5V node –in addition to 2.5V and 3.3V nodes for which LV-A is also fully specified.
How LV-A(T) compares to other technologies
In terms of output current and propagation delay, LV-A(T) is comparable to LVC but it extends supply voltage to 5.5V. It also adds the convenience of low-noise characteristics, ensuring clean signals.
Compared to AHC(T), LV-A(T) offers partial power-down and delivers both speed and drive improvements. When comparing to HC, LV-A(T) offers significant benefits regarding the drive capability too: at 3.3V, LV-A has similar drive capability as HC at 5V. And when migrating from LV or even VHC(T), LV-A(T) also offers improved operating characteristics and features.
Low-to-medium load applications that require low-noise, especially those with suspend mode or where energy efficiency in standby is key, are thus particularly suited to LV-A(T)’s specifications.
Partial power down with IOFF
Partial power-down consists in shutting down unused parts of a circuit and finds its primary use in keeping devices on standby. Logic technologies that support IOFF have no leakage path to the supply rails when the supply voltage is zero. IOFF protection circuitry ensures that no excessive current is drawn from input and output, preventing damage to sub-systems.
